Languages International Christchurch Students Write about Memorable Times in Their Lives

Students from one of the classes at Languages International Christchurch have been writing about their memorable times in their lives.  Here is a selection of what they wrote:

When I was young... One day, I was visiting a Castle in France with my parents when i saw a statue. I had never seen this kind of statue before...so similar to a real human. When I was young, I was very curious that I wanted to touch the statue...So with my plastic sword that I had bought 2 hours before, I beat it.But when i had finished hiting it, The statue moved and spoke to me..I was very affraid. 10 seconds later, when I was trembling, My parents explained to me The statue was in fact a really person who was doing a mime show.

I have a story in my life about accident.3 years ago, I travelled to 'Kao Yai' national park in Thailand for 2 days. The first day, we were treking in the forest and watching many animals.
The second day, we had prepared to go back to Bangkok but some students changed the route. The rain was coming and the road that was very narrow was wet.
The driver couldn't control his bus, the bus hit a mountain. Then, some people helped us and sent us to the hospital. My leg was broken and I stayed at the hospital for 3 days.

When I was 16 years old. My two sisters and I went to the waterfall.
When we arrived there, my younger sister held my youngest sister and they swam together, but neither of them had learnt to swim. My younger sister couldn't swim strongly and my youngest sister couldn't swim at all. While they were drowning, I jumped into the water to help them because I had learnt to swim. I also was drowning. Then men, who were sitting by the water, came to save us.

When I was seventeen years old, I was having dinner with my family and they asked: "Gu, would you like to have a party to celebrate your eighteenth birthday. You've never had a big and fantastic celebration and this age is so important in your life."

Actually, you had had a fifteenth birthday party, but you didn't have fun. And I said: "Well, I don't know. You know that I don't like parties."

After two months I decided to make the celebration and it was wonderful. I invited all of my best friends and all of my cousins went to my home. But the party started early, because while I was taking a shower, a lot of friends arrived.

It was the biggest celebration of my life.

I've never received a lot of and nice gifts like on my eighteen's birthday.  Everybody was so happy and another thing that was wonderful is that my parents hired a japanese restaurant, a barman, and a "dj" just to do special japanese food, typical brazilian drinks and play a lot of songs, all of which I was really keen on.

In fact, on that day I was totally happy and I will never forget it. It's hard to say, but I think that I will never have another party like this one.

This history began when I, my sister and my cousins were around 10 years old. In that time, my cousins were visiting us in Natal (northest of Brazil). We used to eat fruit in the backyard of our neighboor after we had jumped the wall. I still remember how such delicious fruit used to be. We immediately invited our cousins to invade the camp of battle that was on the other side of the wall.

Yeap, we joined up to do a battle of bad fruit that we had found on the floor, all against all. My older sister hadn't accepted to play with us but jumped over too. After few minutes we heard a stuffy shout. My sister was under a big tree branch.

She told us that when she tried to pull a very small fruit from the tree all the branch had came down. We asked her to not shout anymore or we will leave her there shouting until our neighboor appear and, of course, complain to our father. We helped her in the end.

Auckland West Coast Beaches

Have you ever been on New Zealand’s amazing west coast? If your answer is ‘no’, you should go to these lovely places as fast as possible. I’ve been to three of these beaches. I’d like to describe them and give you some impressions.

The easiest thing to recognise, and also the most exciting fact is that there’s black sand, which gets its unusual colour from the volcanic stone, on the west coast. I’ve never seen a beach in this style before. Usually the coastline at these spots is quite rough and huge waves reach the coast. Be careful swimming! There are strong rips and currents. You’d better ask your guide before you enter the water.

Piha beach is the most famous of Auckland’s west coast beaches. There are two lookout points, which you can reach by a 15-minute walk. One of them, called Lion Rock, is famous for its shape that looks like a resting lion. Piha beach is a surfer’s paradise; paradise with the meaning of a nice surfer spot located in a beautiful landscape. What I never will forget is the breathtaking sunset we saw at this beach.

Bethells beach is rougher than Piha beach and it might be the roughest of these beaches. I loved the noise of the waves smashing against the rocks. All the surfers I saw were wearing  helmets; I’ve never seen this before. We needed to cross a little creek at the beginning of our two-hour walk along the beach. I took off my shoes while others tried to jump over the gap. Some of them had success but others ended up with wet shoes. What I want to express with the previous sentence is that I suggest taking off your shoes! But it was worth doing this, because we visited the caves, which are at the other end of the beach. You can walk through them and take some interesting pictures.

Last but not least, there is Karekare beach, which is located next to Piha beach. The road down to Karekare is steep and windy. So when you reach the end of the valley you feel like you are hundreds of miles away from Auckland. There are only a few houses and thousands of trees. We did an hour-long bushwalk up the hill and through the rainforest which is thick and filled with tropical plants. There are a couple of lookouts on the way from where you can enjoy a nice view over the beach. After this amazing walk did we go down to the beach. There is a sand dune in front of a rock face. You should have a competition who is able to climb it as the fastest. That’s funny and a good entertainment.

The beach walks are in my opinion the best social programme activities. You can do speaking practise while you enjoy an incredible landscape. It’s a must to visit these spots! If I hadn’t seen these beaches I wouldn’t know the real New Zealand. Book it and enjoy it!

Our First Week in Christchurch

We just arrived in NZ last weekend, and started our exciting life of study abroad. Everything is special and different for us.

The air is extremely fresh, the sky is blue, and we can see the birds everywhere. To our big surprise, Christchurch is the second biggest city in NZ, but it is quiet and clean, without too many skyscrapers. Everyone here is hospitable and looks happy. We love this city.

Our life of study in L.I. is amazing. We’ve got many friends from different countries and our teachers are also great. Our teacher, Susan loves drawing pictures in classes, in order to make us understand new words more clearly. It’s very interesting.

Thanks to everyone here, and we love the life here.

Studying Experience in Languages International

We chose the school, because we know L.I. offers different kinds of courses for students who want to improve their skills. We decided to choose L.I. because I can change to another class to have different experiences with new teachers and new students. So I don’t feel bored to be always studying general English. For example, I changed to the IELTS course to improve my writing, because I know what I want to learn.

Some students, made a short video about the interesting places around our school and they learned a lot. Other students did a survey about several topics and talked to others to get their results, which was very interesting.

Languages International Students Recommend Best Travel Destinations in New Zealand's South Island

The following South Island destination recommendations were written by a well-traveled CAE class at Languages International in Christchurch:

Akaroa – The Pearly Gates

One place you should visit in New Zealand is Akaroa. This lovely small village is only 1 hour away from Christchurch by car, but the atmosphere is completely different. You can feel the French origin and its dreamy and romantic life style.
What should you do in Akaroa?
Firstly, I think it would be a good idea to see the dolphins. You could go swimming with the dolphins or if you are afraid of being in the water, why not go on a cruise and see them from the boat? Secondly, I think it’s worth doing the “Banks Peninsula Track” which takes you 4 days around Akaroa. Finally, if I were you I would wander around the village and enjoy the French atmosphere.

Franz Joseph

If you are wondering where to go in the South island in NZ, why don’t you go to Franz Joseph and c
limb up the ice mountain. Once you get there, all equipment for climbing such as spikes, backpack, a jacket and pants are able to be rented. You do not have to worry about them. There are two options for walking up to the mountain; 3 hours or one day trips. If I were you I would take the 3 hour course because it may be too hard for people who aren’t really fit to try a whole day. But it’s up to you. I need to remind you that it is usually not nice weather on the west coast.
After you have done a lot of exercise, there is a spa in the centre of town. It’s worth going there and soaking yourself so you can relieve your tiredness, Then how about enjoying a pint of New Zealand beer in the bar near the spa? You will deserve it. However, it’s not worth you going to the museum. It’s not such an exciting place to visit. Also, there is a small hill to see kiwi birds, but again I do not recommend you do that.
So, if you have a weekend free, I’d advise you to go there. I’m sure you will have a nice time!

Kaikoura

This beautiful little place is located in the north part of the South Island of New Zealand. It’s a small village which is well known for whale watching and other tourist attractions like fishing, skydiving, horse riding and swimming with the dolphins. Overall, Kaikoura is a very enjoyable and relaxed place.
I think you ought to go on the Kaikoura walk which takes you three hours. At the beginning of this tour you can see lazy seals lying on the coast and just relaxing. After this first special impression you follow a small path up a hill where you continue your way. On this hike you will benefit from indescribable scenery of landscape and ocean. After that it would be best to spend your evening in Dusky Lodge, where you can have a cheap night in accommodation with a well known name and with good facilities.
Go there soon!

Nelson

One place where you should go is Nelson, which is the sunniest place in the South island of New Zealand. Not only does this place have beautiful weather, but also the scenery from beaches to mountains is breath-taking.

When it comes to the attractions which you should go to, why don’t you go to ‘Pupu Springs’? The water there is so cold and clear that it is possible to see deep inside the water. Better still, you will definitely take pleasure from the trees around ‘Pupu Springs which are exotic.
What else? I think you ought to try wine tasting. A variety of wines can be tasted and the quality of them is first-rate because of the weather in Nelson which tends to be fine.
So, all in all, it is worth going to Nelson.

Visiting Christchurch

Is it worth visiting Christchurch? Definitely: Yes!
This lovely city on the east coast of the South island has its very own atmosphere. The river Avon and many beautiful trees form the image of Christchurch. Why don’t you take a walk in the huge Hagley park and enjoy a boat trip on a punt?
Nocturnal people will be pleased with the nightlife in the town. Cosy bars invite you to enter as well as to stay outside and to feel at home while sitting on a sofa. Having a drink with nice live music in the background ends the day agreeably. Nevertheless, you’d better not drink alcohol while walking in the streets – you might get arrested! It would certainly be a pity to spend your time in a prison instead of enjoying the wonderful places in Christchurch!

Queenstown

So many people, especially those who come from a foreign country into New Zealand, ask where they should go to enjoy the beautiful scenery in New Zealand. To my mind, Queenstown is the most beautiful place ever that you can go and find what you are looking for.

I would advise you to travel to Queenstown by car. It is a good idea to drive your car along the West Coast Road until you reach Queenstown. You will find amazing sightseeing along this road, where they let you stop your car and take some photos.
There are many activities which you can spend a good time doing. It would be better to get in a helicopter and take a fantastic tour around Queenstown .The pilot can take you to the top of one of the mountains as well, where you can see the snow covering these places. If I were you I would do Jet boating where boat driver can go so fast and make amazing moves. I think you ought to do Rafting with a group of tourists where you could feel the cooperation between the team members.
Actually you will be able to find a lot of activities that you would enjoy, but this is a short summary about the most impressive activities that I advise you to do.
